Dental implants or bridges – which one is better?
If you need to restore your smile, there are two viable options: dental implants and bridges. These are two very effective techniques that result in restoring function and aesthetics to your teeth. However, each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so the choice can be difficult.
That’s why this time we want to talk to you about dental implants and bridges. You will see what each one consists of, the types of implants and bridges available, the advantages and disadvantages of each of these two techniques, and how to choose the most suitable one for you.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are made of titanium or zirconium and are placed in the jawbone under the gums in a minimally invasive surgical procedure under local anaesthesia. When the implants have been placed, the dentist will fit the fixed crowns or bridges that will replace the missing teeth.
Dental crowns, also called caps, are coverings that fit over a damaged, deteriorated or poorly aesthetic tooth, or replace a missing tooth if it is part of the construction of a dental bridge. And we’ll talk about dental bridges later, but we’ll tell you in advance that implants are not always necessary for their construction.
There are several types of dental implants:
- All-on-4, All-on-6 and All-on-8. When there is partial or total loss of teeth, these techniques install a full arch of 4 dental implants (All-on-4) and up to 6 dental implants (all-on-6) in a single visit to the dentist. In the case of 8 dental implants (all-on-8), ideal when all the teeth are missing, two visits are necessary instead of just one.
- Immediate loading. Within 24 – 48 hours after the implant is installed, a temporary prosthesis is fitted. In other words, the patient regains the function of his or her teeth almost immediately.
- In two stages. They are made up of two pieces, one that is placed inside the bone to replace the root of the natural tooth, and another that is placed on top of the first piece to act as an abutment for the crown, bridge or prosthesis.
Dental implants: advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
- They allow the full functionality of the teeth to be restored, making it possible to bite, eat and speak without difficulty. In fact, the chewing sensation is the same as with natural teeth.
- They restore the patient’s aesthetics and smile.
- They are made of biocompatible materials, i.e. they do not cause rejection by the body or allergic reactions.
- They prevent bone loss in the long term, something that frequently occurs with removable dentures.
- No need for long-term restorative interventions.
- Long service life.
Disadvantages
- Surgery is necessary, with a postoperative and oral recovery process necessary to implant the prosthesis (in the case of immediate load dental implants, this problem is much less).
- They are more expensive than removable prostheses.
- They are sometimes rejected by the body.
- It is possible that some of the pieces may break. The truth is that it is really unlikely that this will happen, but the possibility must be considered.
What is a dental bridge?
Fixed dental bridges, also called fixed partial dentures, are a type of prosthesis that are supported on the abutment teeth, i.e. the remaining healthy teeth in the patient’s mouth, to replace the adjacent missing teeth. In general, they are the best solution for patients who have lost one or more natural teeth.
There are several types of fixed dental bridges, but the most common ones are the:
- Traditional fixed bridges. Made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramic, they are the most common type of bridge. They use one or two dental crowns placed over two abutment teeth (natural teeth adjacent to the gap). Both crowns act as anchors for the artificial teeth to fill the gap. And reshaping of the abutments is necessary.
- Cantilever dental bridges. They look quite similar to traditional ones. But the pontic (false tooth) is attached to the abutment on one side only, instead of two. This means that it can be placed even if there is only one natural tooth adjacent to the gap. As with traditional fixed bridges, the abutments have to be remodelled.
- Maryland bridges. The pontic is fixed by a metal or porcelain framework that is bonded to the back faces of the abutments. As the crowns are not responsible for the attachment of the pontic, there is no need to polish the abutment.
- Implant-supported bridges. In this case, as the name suggests, it is dental implants that support the bridge, rather than crowns or frameworks. But it is also possible for the bridge to consist of a pontic suspended between two implant-supported crowns, usually when an implant cannot be placed in the gap.
Dental bridges: advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
- The treatment is more economical than dental implants.
- Long service life.
- Easy to maintain.
- Prevents mobility of adjacent teeth.
- Improves masticatory function.
- It is an aesthetic solution.
Disadvantages
- Remodelling of adjacent teeth is necessary
- Treatment is more expensive than a removable prosthesis
- The metal of the bridge can stain the tooth or the gum
- There may be leakage between the fixed bridge and the tooth stump (custom-made metal piece, which is permanently lodged inside the root of the tooth and protrudes in the form of a stump).
- There may be mobility of the core build-up.
Dental implants vs. bridges: which is better for me?
When choosing whether to have dental implants or bridges, you need to consider the following factors:
- Durability and strength. Because they have more structure, dental implants generally have a longer life and greater strength than fixed dental bridges.
- Aesthetics. Although both dental implants and bridges are aesthetically pleasing, dental implants offer a more natural-looking smile, especially if the crown is made of zirconia.
- Dental grinding. As we have already seen, in order to fit a bridge, the adjacent healthy teeth have to be ground down, which risks damaging them and definitely affects their appearance. And, if the grinding greatly reduces the volume of these teeth, endodontics will have to be performed. Dental implants, on the other hand, do not require grinding.
- Price. Due to their characteristics and the technique used, fixed dental bridges are much cheaper than dental implants.
As you can see, everything seems to indicate that dental implants are better than bridges in almost every aspect, except price. However, the criteria we have used in this article are for reference only. To find out which is better for you, a dental implant or a bridge, you need to visit an expert in implantology to study your case and determine the best procedure.
