What is a female hair transplant?
Hair transplant surgery or “hair grafting” has become fashionable among men. However, more and more women are interested in this type of treatment. Although baldness seems to be something typically male, up to 40% of women suffer from female alopecia at some point in their lives. In addition, hair is for women one of the parts of the body in which they invest more resources and its absence often causes concern. Excessive hair loss has serious psychological effects, from loss of self-esteem to depression, and more and more women are coming for consultation to find out if it is possible for them to have a hair graft. Therefore, we will try to answer the most common questions in this post.
Differences between male and female alopecia
Are there differences between male and female alopecia? Yes, there are.
- Female androgenetic alopecia is characterized by a different distribution compared to male alopecia. Men suffering from alopecia end up having completely depopulated areas, mainly the crown and sides (the receding hairline). In women, however, there is usually a general and diffuse thinning of the hair.
- Hair loss in women is more gradual, with peaks such as menopause or after childbirth.
- Hair loss in women can be significant, without ever disappearing completely.
How can I know if I suffer from alopecia and to what degree?
Many women appreciate that they can see their scalp through their hair, but don’t know how far along they are. If this is your case, looking into the Ludwig scale to personally check your degree of baldness it’s a good starting point.
Can hair grafting be performed on women?
The decision as to whether a woman can undergo a female hair transplant in Turkey depends on a number of factors:
- Have localized or diffuse but stabilized alopecia.
- It is essential to have followed a previous medical treatment to stabilize the alopecia. Many times, patients come to the clinic thinking of having a hair transplant and with proper treatment they improve to such an extent that they can postpone the graft for a while.
- To have quality follicles in the donor area so that they can be used in the alopecic area.
Can women undergo a hair transplant with the same guarantees as men?
Of course. The fundamental thing is to make a previous study of each patient, analyze what type of alopecia she has, its causes and carry out a previous adequate treatment. Some cases with good potential are:
- Women with a similar type of hair loss to men, predominantly in the parietal region (upper area).
- Women with hair loss due to traction alopecia.
- Women of any age with scars, skin transplantation or stitches from other surgical operations.
- Cases where hair loss occurs in localized areas instead of diffuse hair loss, with a more masculine pattern.
- Hair loss due to burns, accidents, trauma, etc.
What can happen without prior analysis?
Not all women are candidates for a female hair transplant in Turkey. Sometimes alopecia is produced by various causes that must be treated separately, for example, thyroid problems or derived from some medication. In these situations, to go for a hair transplant can be totally counterproductive. This is the case of those who decide to go to Turkey, where there is no follow-up before or after the intervention. It may happen that after some time the patient loses the non-transplanted hair while maintaining the transplanted hair. It is essential not to treat hair loss by oneself or with techniques that have not been advised by a specialist.
It is best to go to the root of the problem and be advised by an expert. Whether the solution is a transplant or not.
FUE or FUSS: which is the better technique?
Once the diagnosis indicates that you are a good candidate for hair transplantation, many women ask themselves this question. In principle there is no one technique that is better than another. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages but the end result is the same. From our experience in hair transplantation we think it is best to be able to perform either technique so that we can choose between one or the other the one that best suits the needs of each woman.
We summarize here some of the most important aspects, advantages or disadvantages of each hair transplant technique.
- The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique consists of extracting the follicular units (“hairs”) one by one and inserting them one by one where necessary.
- With the FUE technique it is necessary to shave at least the donor area, something that many women often do not want to do.
- The FUE technique leaves no scar or minimal scars.
- With the FUSS technique or strip technique the scar is minimal and easily hidden when the hair grows.
- In the FUSS technique a small strip is extracted from the nape of the neck, this is the “donor” area from which the hair is extracted to cover the area with alopecia.
- The final result is achieved after 12 months, but after 6 months the difference is already noticeable.
- Hair dyes should not be applied during the first month after surgery.
- The hair should not be washed in the first 48 hours. Then you should wash it with a mild shampoo.
- The post-operative period is very bearable but I recommend that patients choose a time when they can disappear from their social activities and work life for about 7-10 days.
What is the best time to have a hair transplant? Can I wear a cap, hat, sunbathe or swim in the pool?
There is no one time of the year that is clinically better than another. Some people prefer winter because sun exposure should be avoided for the first 3 or 4 days after the graft and because you will not be able to bathe (not wash) completely until 10 days after the hair transplant. The pool and the beach are ruled out for the first few days.
Other patients also prefer the summer because it is more discreet “disappear” for a few days on vacation and because you can not wear a hat or cap that contact with the grafts until 4 days after surgery.
