What is a FUE hair transplant?

The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique consists of extracting follicular units from areas with good hair density, which we call donor areas, to implant them in areas with low density or alopecic, called recipient areas.

What is a follicular unit?

A follicular unit is a grouping of several follicles that are extracted together. Each follicular unit can have between 1 to 5 hairs. The average per follicle depends very much on each person, but it is usually around 2.2 hairs. Therefore, when we talk about a transplant of 2,000 follicular units, we mean about 4,400 hairs.

Will the transplanted hair fall out again?

Hair removed from the nape of the neck and posterior areas of the scalp is genetically programmed not to fall out. Thus, even people with severe baldness often retain hair in this area. These follicles remain resistant to hair loss even if they are moved from one area of the head to another, so transplanted hair will not fall out over the years. The remaining hair in the recipient area will continue to fall out normally.

Is the result similar to natural hair?

The FUE hair transplant in Turkey is currently performed with micrografts very different from those used a few years ago, called mini-grafts. The main difference is that previously groups of up to 10 and 20 follicles were transplanted with scalpels with a diameter of more than 3 mm, which left the effect known as “doll’s hair”. Currently, incisions of less than 1 mm are made to extract individual follicular units, so that the result is imperceptible with respect to natural hair. This obvious improvement in technique and results has encouraged many people to undergo this treatment.

Does FUE leave marks or scars?

For the extraction of the follicular units, micro-scalpels with a hollow cylindrical tip of a very fine diameter, usually 0.8 to 0.9 mm, are used. These scalpels leave tiny holes that heal within approximately one week. They are in fact a multitude of small wounds, but are imperceptible after healing.

What is the preparation before the intervention?

The FUE hair transplant in Turkey is performed in an outpatient procedure and under local anesthesia so it does not require hospital admission, or be in conditions of fasting or other precautions typical of interventions with regional or general anesthesia. The patient is also provided with an anxiolytic or relaxant so that he/she can be more relaxed during the intervention.

Do I have to shave my whole head for the procedure?

In order to identify the follicles to be extracted from the donor area, the hair must be shaved. The same day of the intervention and prior to entering the operating room, the donor area is shaved, although in many cases it is more aesthetic to shave all areas leaving a look that is currently common in men. In addition, in a few weeks we get to have short hair.

Can shaving be avoided?

In the case of women or men with very long hair it may be more difficult to assume the shaving. In these cases, a technique called flap technique can be used, which allows working the extraction area without it being noticeable after the intervention. In males with short hair it is preferable to shave.

How long does an FUE procedure last?

These are long and laborious procedures. As the follicles have to be transplanted one by one, the surgical task usually takes several hours. Depending on the number of follicular units, the procedure may take a morning, a whole day or even two consecutive days. However, it is usually performed in one day. A good hair surgeon can perform up to 2,500 and 3,000 implants in a single day.

What are the phases of the FUE procedure?

Once in the operating room, the first phase is called extraction, in which the hair surgeon extracts the follicular units one by one with cylindrical micro-scalpels in a meticulous and highly precise process. After the extraction, preparation takes place, in which the team of hair technicians classify and prepare the follicles for implantation. This prevention is carried out simultaneously with the extraction so that when the surgeon has finished extracting the follicles, the implantation can begin. The implantation can be performed by means of implanters or microincisions. The implanters are like small syringes with a grooved needle through which the follicle is implanted. They can have different needle diameters depending on the size of the follicle to be implanted.

How is the recovery from the procedure?

After the FUE intervention, the patient can go home and lead a normal life, always taking care to avoid direct contact with the area where the implant has been made, since the implanted follicles can detach. The appearance during the first days is of multiple small wounds in the head so it may be convenient, if we can afford it, to take a few days of rest or work from home. In the first 48 hours the face may swell due to the effect of local anesthesia. After 72 hours the scars of the extractions will be closed and after the first week or ten days the appearance will be practically normal.

When will I notice the effect of the transplant?

The transplanted hair falls a few weeks after the intervention. This is to be expected and normal but it does not affect the hair follicle, which is the structure that is really the objective of the transplant. The grafted follicles begin their normal growth cycle and between 3 and 6 months we will see the results of the new hair changing the appearance of our scalp. After nine months the result is already complete.

When is the FUE technique appropriate?

The FUE technique is currently applied in more than 90% of hair transplant patients, as it has clear advantages over FUSS. It is especially suitable for people who wish to keep their hair short, avoid scars or who do not wish to undergo a more aggressive procedure.
