What is gastric bypass?

Gastric bypass in Turkey is a bariatric surgery technique in which the size of the stomach is reduced. In this procedure, a stomach of reduced capacity (20-50 cubic centimeters) is constructed and the function of the small intestine is modified by means of a bypass so that the patient only uses part of the stomach and intestine for digestion. In this way, food bypasses a segment of the small intestine to reduce the absorption of calories and nutrients. Due to the reduction in the size of the stomach, the amount of food the patient can eat is also reduced, the feeling of satiety is increased with less food intake and appetite is reduced.

When diets fail, surgery is the safest and most effective option to achieve significant weight loss over time.

Obesity is not only a question of aesthetics or self-esteem, it is a disease that reduces life expectancy and is associated with a higher incidence of some types of cancer and other diseases such as type II diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis, infertility, heart failure, sleep apnoea and vascular insufficiency.

Obesity surgery is indicated for:

  • People with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40.
  • For people with a BMI greater than 35 and associated diseases (high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, sleep apnoea, etc.).

What does the gastric bypass operation consist of?

The gastric bypass operation is preferably performed laparoscopically, making small incisions through which the necessary surgical material is introduced. Laparoscopic surgery has become one of the safest and most effective surgeries.

The procedure lasts approximately 80 to 180 minutes and the patient will spend at least 24 hours in intensive care after the operation. Afterwards, two to four days of hospitalisation and one month of recovery are required.

For the surgery to be successful, the patient must make lifestyle changes and eat a healthy diet.

How much weight will I lose?

Patients who undergo surgery lose between 40 and 90 kg after surgery.
With gastric bypass in Turkey, a reduction of between 50 and 90% of excess weight is achieved, usually between 40 and 90 kg or even more depending on the pre-operative weight. Weight loss is progressive from the first month to 12-18 months after the operation. It is considered a success if half of the excess weight is lost, and most of the patients overcome it.

Benefits of gastric bypass
