What is a gingivectomy?

Achieving a perfect smile is an ever-increasing concern in our society. One of the treatments to improve the aesthetics of the mouth is gingivectomy. Do you know what gingivectomy in Turkey is?

It is a surgical procedure that consists of removing a piece of gum that surrounds the tooth in order to improve the aesthetics of the smile. However, it is also a dental treatment that is used to solve a lesion of the gum or gingival tissue.

Specifically, this process is used to reduce a periodontal pocket or space formed between the gum and the tooth due to the accumulation of bacteria in the area. This pocket can destroy the supporting bone and aggravate the periodontal disease. When these pockets are detected, it is advisable to undergo a gingivectomy treatment.

HOW TO PERFORM A GINGIVECTOMY?

This treatment is a surgical procedure that is recommended when a patient has supraosseous pockets more than 3 millimetres deep, as a consequence of suffering from periodontal disease or for aesthetic reasons, after carrying out an aesthetic analysis of the smile and assessing the advisability of carrying out the treatment.

This surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is painless. It consists of making a small cut in the gum in order to remove the bacterial plaque that has accumulated in the periodontal pocket.

When the patient receives local anesthesia, the following steps are usually followed:

1. With the help of forceps, the depth of the periodontal pocket is determined.
2. The place where the cut is to be made is marked through the periodontal probe.
3. The cut is made at the marked site with a scalpel, from the apical to the marked points.
4. The excess tissue is removed with the scalpel.
5. The gingival tissues are smoothed with a rotating instrument.
6. The operated area is protected with surgical cement to prevent postoperative problems.
7. After undergoing this treatment there is a postoperative period.

WHAT IS THE POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD FOR GINGIVECTOMY?

The postoperative period for this intervention is very similar to other surgical treatments and may involve some bleeding. To alleviate this effect, it is advisable to apply gauze to the area. During this period it is not recommended to spit or rinse your mouth, as this could dislodge the clot and cause increased bleeding.

In the first week, the area may become swollen. This swelling does not last more than seven days. To alleviate the discomfort, the dentist may recommend taking an analgesic.

The postoperative period usually lasts about two weeks. During this period the gums will be completely healed. Gingivectomy should not be confused with gingivoplasty.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GINGIVOPLASTY AND GINGIVECTOMY

They are two very similar treatments that, in fact, can be performed at the same time. While gingivectomy in Turkey is a treatment that can be aesthetic or to solve periodontal problems in the gingival tissues, gingivoplasty is a purely aesthetic treatment and aims to improve the smile by correcting the size of the gums.
