What is a mastopexy?

Breast lift or Mastopexy in Turkey is a surgical technique used to lift and shape sagging breasts. The passage of time and circumstances such as pregnancy, breastfeeding and gravity tend to cause the breast to become flaccid. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breast loses its shape and droops. When the breast, in addition to sagging, has lost or has little volume, a prosthesis can also be placed or even a transfer of your own fat (lipofilling) can be performed.

There are different surgical techniques to lift the breast. The surgeon will define the most suitable one according to the size and shape of your breasts and your own expectations.

ANAESTHESIA: General anaesthesia

EFFECTS: Immediate

RECOVERY: 1 week

RESULTS: Long lasting

Mastopexy in Turkey consists of lifting the areola and the nipple, giving shape and firmness to the breast. It is not always necessary to remove breast tissue if the volume is not excessive, only the excess skin.

The amount of scarring required will depend on the amount of skin tissue to be removed. In certain cases, when the breast is small and has little sagging, the incision is placed only around the areola.

Sometimes, for breast lift, it may be necessary to place a prosthesis under the breast tissue or pectoral muscle in breasts with little volume, which will also reduce the amount of scarring.

There are cases in which the sagging or drooping of the breasts is so significant that, even if breast prostheses are placed, scarring cannot be avoided.

Cosmetic breast surgery in Istanbul is performed under general anaesthesia, although in certain cases mastopexy can be performed under local anaesthesia plus sedation. The mastopexy lasts between 1 and 3 hours.

Thanks to mastopexy, the breast recovers its harmony and shape, so that the patient will be able to recover the aesthetics of the breast.

After the breast lift you will be able to return to work in a few days, depending on the physical demands of your daily activities.

It is essential to undergo a medical examination beforehand, as in all operations, to detect any anomaly that may contraindicate the mastopexy operation.

The surgeon will assess and study those cases in which the patient has coagulation or scarring problems, as well as those cases in which there are cardiovascular, systemic or autoimmune diseases.

After the mastopexy it is normal to feel a little tired for a few days, but you will be able to lead an almost normal life from the second week onwards, depending on the technique used.

Most of the discomfort is well controlled with the medication prescribed by the plastic surgeon.

Initially the scars will have a pinkish appearance, which will improve steadily from 5 weeks after the breast lift.

You should avoid exposing the scars to the sun for at least three months. Sunlight can cause permanent pigment changes in the skin, leading to darkening of the scars.

If sun exposure is imperative, use sunscreen.

Are there risks associated with this intervention?

Mastopexy leaves permanent and visible scars, although they can be concealed under a bra or bikini top. Over time, the scars will become less noticeable. Some patients may experience a partial or even total loss of nipple sensation.

Will I be able to breastfeed in the future?

In principle, yes. However, it is always possible that the breast lift may lead to a reduction in the possibility of breastfeeding.

Is the postoperative period painful?

After breast lift surgery it is normal to feel a little tired for a few days, but after 48 hours you will be able to return to an almost normal life. Most of the discomfort is well controlled with the medication prescribed by your plastic surgeon. For the first three days, it will be necessary for the patient to breathe through their mouth, as they will be wearing a small sponge packing that will prevent them from breathing through their nose.

Does the procedure interfere with mammograms?

Mastopexy has no influence on mammograms. They will be just as reliable and it is not necessary to have them more frequently than previously indicated by your gynecologist.
