What is a neck lift ?

The neck lift in Turkey is a facial surgery performed to eliminate flaccidity and wrinkles in the neck area. It is one of the variants of the facelift but especially focused on the area under the chin and jaw.

This is a neck rejuvenation surgery that is carried out on people who have excess skin in this area. This is very common in mature skin in patients over 40 years of age, as the natural process of skin ageing produces the appearance of wrinkles and flaccidity. Both wrinkles and flaccidity are the result of the loss of elasticity and collagen in the dermis with the passage of time.

In this way, a neck lift is a solution to the flaccid skin that can hang below the face and which gives an aged and unsightly appearance. In this way, the patient’s double chin caused by excess skin is eliminated and firmness is restored to the tissues to achieve a smooth and youthful neck. What does a neck lift consist of?

The neck lift is usually performed under general anaesthesia, although it can sometimes be performed under local anaesthesia. It lasts approximately four to five hours as with most facelifts.

Its main objective is to define the natural contour of the neck. To do this, two incisions are made behind each ear of about five centimetres and an incision is made in the nape of the neck next to the hairline. Through these incisions, access is gained to the SMAS skin tissue, i.e. the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, and the surgeon can separate the skin and tighten the muscles at the same time to eliminate wrinkles and remove excess skin.

Who is it suitable for?

The neck lift is indicated for patients with mature skin, usually over 45 years of age, who have excess skin in the lower face, under the chin.

Sometimes this flaccidity is in turn associated with excess fat in the jowl area, which causes aesthetic discomfort to patients. For this reason, this surgery is usually combined with cervical liposculpture.

The neck lift provides several advantages:

  • Eliminates excess flaccid skin.
  • Gives firmness to the neck tissues.
  • Defines the contour and profile of the area.
  • Corrects skin folds and wrinkles.

Postoperative care after a neck lift

The postoperative period after the neck lift is not usually painful or excessively uncomfortable. The only effects that the patient may notice at first is swelling of the area and perhaps the appearance of some oedema. These are completely normal and will disappear as time goes by.

After the operation, the surgeon places a bandage on the treated area, which is removed after 24 hours. The patient must then wear a compressive bandage or elastic mesh on the area for at least two weeks. This is done to fix the tissues and contain any bruising and oedema that may have appeared.

The results of the neck lift are very satisfactory and long-lasting. However, they may not be definitively visible until at least three months after the surgery. In addition, one of the advantages of this procedure is that the scars are not visible as they are located in the natural folds of the ears and in the nape of the neck, which is hidden by the hairline.
