What is a septoplasty?

Septoplasty in Turkey, also known as nasal septum repair, is a common surgery in Turkey performed to correct anatomical problems of different natures in the nasal septum, which represents the structure inside the nose that separates it into two fossae or chambers. These problems are usually obstructions in the nose, resulting in uncomfortable situations for the patient.

This surgery in Istanbul is performed with the patient under general anesthesia, so the patient is always unconscious and pain-free. In rare cases, patients undergo septoplasty under local anesthesia, keeping them awake during the procedure. An uncomplicated septoplasty takes about one and a half hours.

The procedure involves cutting the wall on one side of the nose and then lifting the mucous membrane covering the inside of the nose. At this point, the surgeon will be able to remove or move any element, whether cartilage or bone, that is causing the obstruction in the nose. Finally, the mucous membrane is held in place through the use of sutures and splints.

Is septoplasty worthwhile?

The reasons why septoplasty in Turkey becomes the course of action for patients are varied. Primarily, this procedure is performed to repair a severely deformed nasal septum that is causing airway obstruction in the nose.

Nosebleeds due to anatomical problems are, for most physicians, a compelling reason for septoplasty. Finally, nasal septums that have suffered severe damage of some kind, such as perforation or damage from drug use, usually undergo septoplasty to try to reconstruct the area and enable the patient to breathe normally.

Pre-operative procedure in Turkey

Septoplasty is a simple procedure, so preparation is not too difficult. Before the procedure begins, the patient is given anesthesia, either general or local and as with any surgery, the patient is monitored at all times.

In most cases, the doctor will ask the patient to avoid any food and drink after the night before the septoplasty, in order to avoid unforeseen events before, during, and after the procedure.

Another measure to be taken before septoplasty is to apply clotting medications 15 days beforehand. These will be prescribed by the attending physician if deemed necessary.

The medical treatments that the surgeon may prescribe prior to surgery are different. Medications and supplements unrelated to septoplasty should be stopped days before the procedure if deemed necessary by the physician.

As with treatments, the patient’s allergies should be thoroughly tested prior to surgery. This is essential to avoid any unwanted reactions during septoplasty.

Post-Operative Septoplasty Procedure

In most cases of septoplasty and if everything has gone according to plan, the patient goes home the same day. The patient’s nose is packed tightly using special sponge materials or simply cotton wool. This is done to prevent nosebleeds.

As mentioned before, certain elements are used to keep the mucous membrane in place for the septoplasty during the postoperative period. Due to the intrusiveness of the procedure, at least for the nasal septum, there may be swelling, drainage, and pain in the following days.

In most well-executed cases of septoplasty, full recovery occurs within a few weeks.

Risks of Septoplasty in IStanbul

As with any surgical procedure, there are a number of risks to which the patient is exposed when undergoing septoplasty. In this case, they have controlled risks that we at IOM Institute diligently manage to eliminate or minimize as much as possible. Among the most general risks, we can mention:

  • High bleeding.
  • Infections.
  • Allergic reactions to medications used before, during, and after the procedure.
  • Reactions to anesthesia.
  • Respiratory and cardiac problems

Exceptionally, septoplasty presents, due to its peculiar set of characteristics, a series of risks:

  • Varied changes in sensation in the nose.
  • Asymmetry in the appearance and dimensions of the nose.
  • Remarkable scarring.
  • Discoloration of the skin.
  • Delicate fluid accumulation within the tissues of the nose.
  • New damage and problems in the septum wall.
  • New nasal blockage.

When septoplasty fails to correct the nasal blockage in the patient, a new surgery is usually proposed in Istanbul to repair the new situation or to insist on the pre-existing one,
