Originally known as the UCT Medical Centre, the hospital was opened in February 2002 by a German investor, the Rhön Klinikum. In August 2002, a South African health consortium, BEE, Community Health Group (CHG), Netcare and West Care, took over the hospital, which was renamed UCT Private Academic Hospital.

Expect the worst private hospital treatment by far. My dad received a Whipple procedure a week ago which went well. It's the quality and absence of care that is going to prevent him from leaving the place alive. When the vital sign monitors start blaring, visitors have to call a nurse to check up on a patient in danger or replace an empty drip to quiet down the constant beeps from the monitoring devices. My dad phoned me the other day and asked me to bring a blanket from home after urinating in his bed left him shivering from the cold. He was told that there were no spare blankets at the time (his catheter was removed a few hours before so this incident was to be expected).Despite this being an intensive care unit and the daily cost being astronomical, he is lying in a side room not visible from the nurses station. There's a serious lack of nursing presence in the ward which my dad shares with a few other patients. My mother, who spends a few hours per day beside his bed, rarely sees a nurse entering.

The service is as poor as in a government facility with the staff as unfriendly and unhelpful!

Just had my first appointment with my cardiologist. What could have been a very scary ordeal, was handled with so much care and finesse, that I feel positive about the future.The hospital itself is very clean and the staff that I dealt with was very professional and friendly. The cardiologist that I dealt with is simply awesome 👌
